Golden Nugget Closes Sports Betting App

The Nevada Golden Nugget sports betting app has ceased functioning, with the company discontinuing taking bets on its mobile app this week.

Mobile sportsbook accounts with Golden Nugget are still active. Those using the app can visit a Golden Nugget retail sportsbook to withdraw funds. If users are unable to visit a retail location for withdrawal, they have the option to leave the funds in their accounts.

Golden Nugget’s retail sportsbooks in Nevada are still operational. The sportsbook at the downtown Las Vegas casino is open every day from 9 am to 9 pm. The Laughlin branch opens at 11 am on weekdays and 8 am on weekends, closing at 6:30 pm on weekdays and at 7 pm on weekends.

Despite the mobile accounts remaining active, the app does not process bets. All wagering with Golden Nugget must be done in person at a physical sportsbook in either Las Vegas or Laughlin.

Two options for pending wagers

There are two ways to manage pending bets in a Golden Nugget mobile sportsbook account.

A user of the Golden Nugget mobile app can go to a Golden Nugget retail sportsbook, print paper tickets for any open bets, and cash them if they win. If the user doesn’t print a ticket, the casino will mail a check for any open bets. However, it will take approximately 60 days from the resolution of the final mobile bet before the check is sent by Golden Nugget.

If any unresolved bets are left in a mobile account, the sportsbook will process and grade them as usual.

No new online sports betting solution (yet)

The Golden Nugget has informed the Las Vegas Review-Journal via email that they are looking forward to offering a new mobile solution in the future.

Golden Nugget did not provide any additional information. There is no specified timeframe for the availability of a new app.

Golden Nugget has time on its side. During the summer, sports betting in Nevada slows down due to the absence of pro or college football games.

The playoffs for both the NBA and NHL will conclude in just over a month. Most sports betting during the summer is focused on MLB games and future football events.

A brief review of the forthcoming agenda for the Nevada Gaming Control Board in May reveals no potential new sports betting app operators.

Could DraftKings enter the Nevada market?

Golden Nugget has not disclosed any details about a new app or sportsbook partner. Nevertheless, DraftKings purchased Golden Nugget Online Gaming (GNOG) for $1.56 billion in 2021.

GNOG was an independent company, distinct from Golden Nugget’s retail casino operations.

The agreement also provides DraftKings with access to 5.5 million members of the rewards club of Golden Nugget and Landry’s. The Golden Nugget is owned by Tilman Fertitta, who also owns Landry’s restaurants.

This deal includes an additional element. Upon announcing the deal, Golden Nugget intended to rebrand its retail sports betting locations to DraftKings Sportsbooks eventually. However, there is currently no set schedule for this transition.

This agreement excludes online sports betting. However, the collaboration between the two businesses may potentially incorporate a mobile sports betting element in the future.

DraftKings does not operate in Nevada, partly due to the state’s in-person registration requirement. This is also a contributing factor as to why FanDuel seems to have no urgency in introducing their mobile sportsbook app to the Silver State.

Boyd Gaming launched a FanDuel-branded sportsbook at Fremont Hotel and Casino last year. They continue to supply odds for the sportsbook carrying the FanDuel brand.

Neither firm has disclosed future plans. However, it’s conceivable that Golden Nugget and DraftKings could undertake a similar initiative by the upcoming football season, if one reads between the lines.

Regardless of the situation, Golden Nugget is expected to have a new app ready by the upcoming football season.
