Station Casinos announced it has purchased more land in Las Vegas. The move comes just a few days after announcing it will demolish three casinos and sell the land.
The company purchased 126 acres of land south of the Vegas Strip for $172 million. This new land purchase is just south of 56.6 acres of land that Station Casinos already owns on Cactus Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.
Station Casinos did not offer specific plans for the land but it appears as though this will eventually become a casino resort. In a statement to the media, the company said:
“We are excited about the potential of this site as a local and regional destination casino resort. The larger acreage parcel allows the Company greater flexibility in master planning to take maximum advantage of the future development. We look forward to sharing our plans in the future.”
Adding to a thriving Nevada gambling landscape, this could end up becoming a massive project for Station Casinos. The new, larger plot of land will be the main focus of whatever the company decides to build. Depending on the plan, Station Casinos could use both plots of land or sell the older land.
A new Station Casinos mega-property would compete with the South Point and M Resort. The two parcels of land are between the two popular local casinos.
The South Point is one mile north of the Station Casinos’ land. M Resort is two miles south of the land.
Station Casinos currently has six full-service casino hotels and 10 Wildfire Casinos.
Last week, Station Casinos announced it will demolish Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Fiesta Henderson and sell the land. The company also mentioned it will continue moving forward creating new properties for tourists and Las Vegas locals.
Two new projects coming from Station Casinos
Station Casinos has two new projects under construction in different parts of the Las Vegas valley. The two properties show the diversity of Station Casinos properties in Las Vegas.
What’s a Wildfire Casino?
A Wildfire casino is being built on five acres of land in downtown Las Vegas. This casino-only property will be partially built on land previously occupied by Castaway Hotel & Casino. The structure was imploded in 2006.
Wildfire Casinos are not the touristy casino hotels many expect to see in Las Vegas. These 10 properties are small casinos focused specifically on gaming machines for Las Vegas residents.
The only Wildfire property connected to a hotel is Wild Wild West. The casino is attached to a Days Inn hotel.
Wildfire Rancho is relatively close to the new casino under construction. The Wildfire casino on Rancho has just 150 slot machines and video poker games. There’s also a bar, sportsbook and one restaurant.
This is similar to other Wildfire casinos around Las Vegas.
A smaller Station Casino
Earlier this year, Station Casinos broke ground on Durango Casino & Resort in the southwest area of Las Vegas. This will be a more traditional, but smaller, Station Casinos property with a hotel, casino and multiple restaurants.
The main difference with the Durango is that it will be smaller than other Station Casinos properties. The Durango hotel will have just over 200 rooms. For comparison, Red Rock Casino has 796 hotel rooms.
Besides the smaller hotel, this will be more along the lines of the kind of full-service property Station Casinos guests expect from the company. Durango Casino is expected to open in late 2023.
Looking further ahead for Station Casinos
The new 126 acres of land purchased by Station Casinos joins four other pieces of real estate the company owns around Las Vegas. This could be a massive property if the company also uses the 56.6 acres near the new land.
Station Casinos also owns four plots of land of different sizes elsewhere around Las Vegas.
- Town Center: 58.2 acres at Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive in Summerlin
- Inspirada: 45 acres in south Las Vegas
- Viva: 96.4 acres near the Vegas Strip on Tropicana near I-15
- Skye Canyon: 47.3 acres in northwest Las Vegas
Last week, Scott Kreeger, President of Station Casinos said the company is already in discussion to build a new property in North Las Vegas. This presumably would be the 47.3 acres at Skye Canyon.
Station Casinos is just starting to build a new future after the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The company shed Palms last year. It’s also in the process of removing three old casinos from its roster.
Meanwhile, Station Casinos is moving forward with construction on a casino and another full-service casino resort.
Looking even farther ahead Station Casinos can add another handful of properties in all corners of the Las Vegas valley.
